Beck and Call

Beck and Call - Ben Krogh

Music is a mysterious thing. As a writer, you may think you know what you're writing about as you put pen to paper, but the subconscious has a funny way of directing narrative. When the work has been done and the ink is dry, themes begin to reveal themselves in a new light. That's exactly where we find ourselves with Beck and Call, a collection of songs that reflect the last several years of my life.

The album is full of journeys and strangers, questions and longings of the soul. The songs paint pictures of life in the midst of seeking greater truths, as well as moments of love found in quiet places. Scripture says to work out your salvation with fear and trembling. These ten songs represent much of that work, knit together with an underlying sense of joy and peace. It's my hope that as you listen, you grow closer to Jesus and know this to be true: you are not alone.

Children of Men

I went looking for myself but I only found me
No more alive, and no more free
Something will have to break before I bend my knee
The prison's well furnished and I don't care to be free

At times I think you're asking me to turn around
That life is still worth living, and truth can be found
But other days your spirit doesn't make a sound
I guess I'll keep on riding the train that's nowhere bound

Wake up, you children of men
He's calling us back to himself again
You gotta make your choice before he comes again
Do you want the judge, or the eternal friend?

So what if all the things you told me end up true
And I hear the words depart, I never knew you?
It's hard to say without some real solid proof,
Can you fault my heart for never loving you?

In The Valley

How can I sing you a new song
if I won't let you make me new?
How can I love with my whole heart
if I don't love the way you do

And it looks like I've taken a turn
Down a path not meant for me
A bitter and broken sojourn
Further into death in the valley

Renew me
I long to feel your light on my face
Redeem me
From this bitter cup that I taste
From this bitter cup that I've made

And I don't know how you love me
when I don't respond in kind
Why do you stay beside me
When it seems I pay you no mind?

That's when I hear your reply
speaking softly deep in my soul
I love you so much that I died
Follow me and I'll make you whole

I'm undone
by the words of life that you bring
Redeemer
My perfect love and holy king
A love that moves my spirit to sing

And it's said that your blood
was poured out to free
All the captives to death
that the blind would now see

So I lay down my pride
The wall that's between
all the love that you've waited
to pour out on me

Freedom Found

My heart has wandered away from your love
Believing the whispered lie that you're not enough
Into the valley the darkness of night
where I forget the warmth of your light

So take my heart it's made out of stone
Soften it up with the greatest love I'll know
Renew my mind there's darkness inside
Illuminate all the broken thoughts I hide

Only your love can make all things new
Only your spirit can fill us with truth
Only your grace can remove our shame
Freedom is found in no other name
Jesus, oh sweet Jesus

If you are our Shepherd do we hear your voice
The still and the small amidst all the noise
and when it is heard Do we heed the call
to Forsake the dim and the gloom for the all in all?

So take my will and may yours be done
And let the prayer of my heart be your Kingdom come
And capture my gaze that I'd bring you praise
That my feet would follow your perfect ways

Better Than I Do

I spoke your name from the top of the stairs
words of love in the soft sunlit air
Is this what your presence feels like,
A warm gentle breeze passing by?
if it is, I've found the perfect place
Your love and your gaze upon my face

I want to know you better than I do
want to feel you closer than my own skin
I want to love you more than yesterday
each new morning walk in your light again

They cursed your name on that dark hillside
A broken king with your arms spread wide
Is this what your presence feels like,
A red crown of thorns, a pierced side?
Yes it is, you bless the ones who kill
The son who loves to do his father's will

I want to know you better than I do
want to feel you closer than my own skin
I want to love you more than yesterday
each new morning walk in your light again

You spoke my name in the morning light
Calling out in a vast, red sunrise
Is this what your presence feels like,
A warm rush of tears, a deep sigh?
Yes it is, it moves me to my knees
To rest in your love so pure and free

I want to know you better than I do
want to feel you closer than my own skin
I want to love you more than yesterday
each new morning walk in your light again

You'll Never Walk Alone

There's an old man walking down the road
talking to himself or someone I don't know
How did he ever get this way?
Was it a choice, or a grave mistake?
I don't know I don't know
but I wish him well and peace along the road

And late at night when I'm all alone
I hear your voice through the telephone
I wish that we could speak face to face
that you were here not so far away
But we can't, no we can't
so we do our best with what we can

We've got a long way to go
until we get home
I pray that you would see the truth
That you'll never walk alone

There's a sight that I long to see
A friendly face smiling back at me
A pair of hands to make my burden light
A lamp to light my path at night
and it's you, always you
who directs my steps and I hold onto yea

We've got a long way to go
until we get home
I pray that you would see the truth
That you'll never walk alone

Reminded of You

When the light is bright about us
And the fear of night is gone
And our hearts are full of fire and spirit song
let us not mistake your goodness
for a virtue of our own
or set our broken hearts upon the throne

When darkness pulls us under
the weight of sin and doubt
may your songs of freedom lead us out
on a way paved with mercy
on a road bathed in light
with your holy presence shining bright

When our eyes aren't enough
may you show us how you're moving toward
the world in your love
When our ears just can't hear
would you sound your trumpet call
so that we'd know you're near

May we not grow weary
as we travel on
reminded of the work that you have done
sin has no power
death has no sting
for the great high priest sits as king

When our eyes aren't enough
may you show us how you're moving toward
the world in your love
When our ears just can't hear
would you sound your trumpet call
so that we'd know you're near

Who I'm Talking To

Sometimes I forget who I'm talking to
I think you're like me but you made me like you
Washed in your blood with a name that's new
Oh yes it's true
What can I do but hope in you

Even at times when I lose my way
You say you'll never leave, that you'll always stay
You hear all the whispered words I pray
What can I say?
Where can I go I'm not alone

Somewhere in the depths of this heart of mine
Your spirit is living with your light divine
No longer my own but a sacrifice
Oh I have died
It's you inside who gives me life

The Race

You're the great joy giver
You're the one who dries our tears
Your mercy and love triumphs over all our fears
Yet in spite of your grace
We still forget your face
Oh beginning and end
come fill our hearts again

Holy Spirit the light we have inside
Cast away our shadows and the secrets that they hide
You awaken the dead, awaken in me
A heart that only beats for thee
Yes a heart that only beats for thee

You're a hope to the hopeless
You take away their pain
You mend the broken hearted
And give them a new name
In the dark of the night
we look to your light
our hearts long for you
oh may our steps be true

Oh sweet Jesus
You died upon a tree
You bore the heavy burden
To make sure we'd be free
Your love so clean and pure opened heaven's door
That we your bride can enter in
You give us grace to enter in

Our father seated on the throne
You made us sons and daughters and call us your own
So let your kingdom come and your will be done
Til we can see you face to face
Heartache and pain will have no place
Yes we will see you face to face
that is why we run the race

Psalm 99

The Lord reigns let the nations tremble
He sits enthroned between the Cherubim
Let the whole earth shake let the whole earth shake

Great is the Lord God in Zion
In Him we trust for he is just and right
Let them praise your name your great and awesome name

The King is mighty and loves Justice
In Him we trust, for He is just and right
Exalt the Lord our God, worship at His throne
Exalt the Lord our God, we worship Him alone

Lord we bring this praise to you our glorious King
Your hand is mighty and together we sing
to seek and live your will, to be your holy bride
for you have set us free, and you have sanctified

Lord we need your love
Come fill us up come fill us up
Lord we need your grace
come fill us up come fill us up

Lord thank you for your love
Come fill us up come fill us up
Lord thank you for your grace
come fill us up come fill us up

Only You

When the last of the hymns are sung
in sanctuaries old
and the coals on the altar are left
lifeless and cold
Only you
Only you
Only you remain

When the wonders and heavenly signs
have faded away
And the mouths of the prophets you send
have nothing to say
Only love
Only love
Only love remains
